John Majhor radio and tv host

John Majhor was the first famous radio and television person I ever worked with.

The Toronto broadcaster was well known in the 1970s and 80s for his DJ work on CHUM radio, and as VJ of the first music video show in Canada called Toronto Rocks where he introduced videos and interviewed musicians. It was a show I watched regularly.

John and I worked together at two Toronto radio stations, first at 97.3 CJEZ where he was morning host and later CFRB 1010 where he filled in as a talk show host. Continue reading “John Majhor radio and tv host”

Wayne Gretzky fan photo

Former hockey player and NHL coach Wayne Gretzky once said ‘you miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.’

I completely missed the shot I took of Gretzky and me, a selfie, during a chance meeting at a hotel in Ottawa, Canada in June 2008. Continue reading “Wayne Gretzky fan photo”

When will the studio lights be turned on for my TV close-up?

Peter Jennings, the anchor of ABC World News Tonight wasn’t at work the day our third year radio and tv broadcasting class toured the network’s New York bureau in late January, 1989.

David Suzuki turns 80!

David Suzuki has entered, what he calls, “the death zone”.  In an interview, the Canadian environmentalist explained that turning 80 is a time when you, “reflect on your own mortality and are compelled to speak from the heart.”   Continue reading “David Suzuki turns 80!”

Blessings on the front lawn

Every Sunday, if the Pope is at the Vatican, he will speak to those who gather outside St. Peter’s Square. The Pontiff usually appears from the window of his apartment at 12 noon, delivers a short message, says a prayer, and then offers his blessing. The entire appearance lasts up to 20 minutes. I have been to two of these ceremonies; once, while back-packing through Europe, and the other time as a radio reporter. Continue reading “Blessings on the front lawn”

Paris, February 1985

Paris during the young and innocent days.
Paris at a peaceful time.

After I absorbed the horrors of the November 13,2015 events that occurred in Paris, my thoughts quickly went back to a trip I took there. Continue reading “Paris, February 1985”
